About me I was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma with my 3 siblings by a single mom and my great x2 uncle who was a former teacher and retired military. They made sure we understood the importance of education, resiliency, discipline and determination. My upbringing and community taught me the importance of needing to have people around who care and nurture different aspects of people. My Approach I look at people as being multifaceted and are influenced by many in their journey. I'm a firm believer that you can decide to change who you are and become who you want to be whenever you decide to. Being willing and open to challenge your own thoughts and behaviors no matter who you are or your age. My approach is transformative through inner work and behavior change.

I provide telehealth/video sessions in California, Colorado, and Utah. I have a special interest in working with college students and young adults. As an LCSW I have provided counseling and psychotherapy to adults for over 35 years. I am certified in treating complex trauma and my approach includes teaching coping tools, insight development, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Mindfulness. I have extensive experience helping young adults, including healing from trauma, anxiety, stress management, and chronic & acute health conditions.
With experience in high-acuity and residential settings, I specialize in trauma-informed care, emotional regulation, and acute crisis intervention for adolescents, adults, and families. This includes psychosis, suicidality, substance use, trauma, and behavioral challenges. Together, we'll work on identifying triggers, managing intense emotions, developing effective communication skills, and building healthy coping skills that feel authentic and sustainable, so you can feel safe, emotionally aware, and equipped for lasting healing. Many of my patients feel overwhelmed, misunderstood, or disconnected, and struggle with trust, especially within family relationships. If this resonates, you’re not alone. At the heart of everything I do is a commitment to meeting you where you are, as a compassionate, genuine, and trustworthy partner every step of the way. Person-centered, strengths-based, and compassionate care isn't just a framework. It's how I show up for every person I work with. That’s why you can always expect a supportive, nonjudgmental space where your unique needs and goals shape each session, and where you always feel safe and heard while building emotional awareness. Drawing on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Narrative Therapy, trauma-informed care, Mindfulness, motivational interviewing, and solution-focused techniques, we'll work to manage intense emotions, strengthen relationships, and build tools for lasting well-being. My approach is calm, collaborative, and warm, with room for authenticity and laughter, because healing feels comes more naturally when the space truly feels like your own. My path to becoming a therapist began with a desire to create positive change by helping those who feel unheard, unseen, or unable to help themselves. That belief has always been at the core of this work: everyone deserves to feel valued, understood, and supported. Experience in high-acuity and residential settings deepened that commitment, working alongside adolescents and families through their hardest moments. When you work with me, you'll find someone who can sit with you through the difficult times while bringing lightness when it's needed. Every session is designed to feel genuine, approachable, and fully in support of your growth. Outside of the therapy room, life is full and family centered. As a mom, much of my time is spent cheering on my kids across a wide range of activities. including wrestling, football, volleyball, track, basketball, boxing, and cheerleading. Giving back to the community is something that matters close to home, too. Supporting my husband's work building a youth football team that creates opportunities for young people from lower-income communities with a passion for the game is a source of real pride and purpose.
I'm an LGBTQIA+, anxiety, and trauma therapist, working with students across Colorado. Do you feel weighed down by anxiety, trauma, identity struggles, or the lasting impact of religious harm? Many of my clients are LGBTQIA+ adults or survivors of religious trauma who carry exhaustion, dread, and fear from living in systems that questioned, silenced, or shamed who they are. Clients also come to me with anxiety, which often shows up as hypervigilance, burnout, or the ache of feeling like you're not enough. You may long for healing and the freedom to be fully yourself. You are not alone, healing is possible, and your story matters. I provide affirming, trauma-informed therapy rooted in narrative, somatic, and liberation-focused practices. Together we’ll untangle harmful messages that have shaped you, teach your body to feel safe, calm your nervous system, and re-author the stories holding you back. You'll reclaim your identity while moving toward a more authentic and empowered life. As a queer-affirming, feminist, and anti-oppressive therapist, I offer care that is tender, respectful, and at the right pace for you. Whether you’re healing from trauma, recovering from a harmful spiritual background, or seeking growth beyond anxiety or hard life transitions, I'll walk with you in it. You have the weight of the world on your shoulders, and have for a very long time. As a child, you had to grow up quickly and take on adult roles, because you had a parent who wasn’t always able to be fully present. Overwhelming emotional pain weighs on you. And you’ve found that the emotional pain shows up as physical pain too - a literal heartache, muscle aches, or back pain. You’ve also lost your appetite or find yourself eating more than usual. You went through something horrific. And you thought you had dealt with it, you thought you could handle it on your own, but it keeps popping its pesky little head up in your current life and relationships. Speaking of which, you have a history of unsuccessful relationships. You long for closeness and intimacy - being validated, loved, and understood - but you can’t seem to avoid toxic people and/or sabotaging the good relationships because when there’s love and harmony you’re waiting for the other shoe to drop. Sometimes as a result of the way you’ve been treated, you question your own worth and value. You worry that your life will never be the same. The fear gnaws at you sometimes that maybe you will never get out from under this boulder of responsibility and heartache on your shoulders. You worry you will never be free. Like my clients, you deserve to find your footing, and discover healing and meaning in life again. Making a full recovery is not out of reach. If you want to not just move on, but move forward, I’d love to help you get there.
Find yourself often feeling out of balance or unfulfilled in life and relationships? Is it a struggle to maintain responsibilities to yourself and others? Are you struggling with anxious thoughts, angry outbursts, feeling overwhelmed and sad? Do you find yourself always putting others first at the expense of your own needs? Have you been ignoring your feelings and find they are starting to feel out of control? I specialize in helping adults and teens build healthier coping strategies, manage emotions more effectively, and let go of negative habits. Whether you’re looking to learn new skills to regulate your emotions, learn to make life more manageable or improve your relationships with family and friends, I’m here to support you every step of the way.In our first sessions, you can expect a safe, non-judgmental space where we’ll explore what’s going on, identify your goals, and start taking small steps toward meaningful change. What makes my practice unique is that I don’t believe in “one-size-fits-all” therapy. We’ll tailor the process to your needs—whether you want to reduce stress, improve relationships, or work toward recovery. I’m passionate about this work because I’ve seen how powerful it is when people feel supported and discover their own resilience. You don’t have to face this alone—healing is possible, and I’d be honored to walk alongside you.
Let’s be real — the state of the world right now is heavy. As if maintaining good mental health weren’t hard enough already, right? I’m here to support with those hard day-to-day challenges, and to help you understand and shift how your past shapes the way you move through the world today. You have a story worth telling, and I want to hear it. My role is to walk beside you — offering perspective, practical tools, and space to heal. I specialize in working with trauma, grief, and anxiety, always guided by mindfulness, compassion, and a holistic perspective on healing. I draw from a variety of therapeutic modalities including EMDR, Internal family systems (IFS or inner child work), Somatic Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). I take a creative approach, weaving together tools from each of these modalities to shape a process that truly fits your needs. For more detail on each, check out the image above. Therapy should feel like a space where you’re truly supported. For some, that means sitting on a cozy couch in an office. For others, it might mean walking through a nearby park or connecting virtually from the comfort of home. You know what feels right for you — and I’d be honored to walk alongside you on that path.
You’re not broken...you’re overwhelmed. If you’re a college student, grad student, or campus professional who looks like they’re “doing fine” but feels anything but fine on the inside, you’re not alone. Many of the people I work with say things like: “My brain never shuts off.” “I overthink everything I say or do.” “I’m exhausted, but slowing down feels scary.” “I keep it together for everyone else, but I’m unraveling inside.” “I don’t know how to rest without guilt.” On the outside, you’re capable, responsible, and high-functioning. On the inside, it feels like you’re carrying a constant mental and emotional load, and you’re tired of holding it all alone. I work with students and campus professionals who are: •burnt out and emotionally overloaded •stuck in anxiety, overthinking, or shame spirals •sensitive to feedback, conflict, or perceived disappointment •struggling with ADHD-style busy brains or emotional regulation •quietly afraid they’re “too much” or “not enough” You don’t need another productivity system, mindset hack, or pressure to “get it together.” You need a space where: •you don’t have to perform •your nervous system can slow down •your thoughts don’t run the show •you can untangle what actually matters to you How we’ll work together My approach is warm, collaborative, and grounded in Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) -a skills-based, evidence-supported approach that helps you: •get out of mental spirals without trying to force your thoughts away •respond more flexibly to stress, emotions, and uncertainty •build self-trust instead of self-criticism •create steadiness without losing your drive or ambition This isn’t about fixing you. It’s about learning how to be with yourself differently with more clarity, compassion, and choice. Support that fits campus life •Online therapy — flexible and accessible around classes, teaching, and work schedules •Walk & Talk sessions — for clients who think better with movement and nature •Small supportive groups — connection without pressure or emotional labor •Between-session tools — gentle prompts and supports so therapy doesn’t live only in the session If you’re wondering… •“Is therapy going to be too intense?” •“What if I don’t even know what I need?” •“What if I’m not ‘bad enough’ for therapy?” Those questions make sense — and you don’t need to answer them before reaching out. I offer complimentary consultations so you can get a feel for the process without pressure or obligation. You don’t have to know exactly what you want yet. We’ll start where you are — and move at a pace that actually works for you. 👉 Schedule a free consultation at www.thereddoortherapy.org ⸻ Emily MacNiven CO Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) LPC.0019496 Founder of The Red Door Therapy & Wellness Solutions Online therapy for adults across Colorado 🔗 www.thereddoortherapy.org
