To help explore sources of current imbalances, I see people holistically, within the contexts of their lives and as parts of larger structures and systems that constantly impact their health. A background as a Master Certified Health Coach and certified teacher of a somatic mindfulness based practice since 2010 informs my whole-person wellness approach to counseling and therapy. While completing my graduate degree in clinical mental health counseling, I received training and offered counseling at Portland State University in the Community Counseling Clinic and at the Student Health and Counseling Center (SHAC) where I held individual counseling sessions, offered group psychoeducation and co-facilitated group therapy for social anxiety and group counseling for international students navigating transitions and cultural complexities. Psychotherapeutic Approaches: Trauma informed, relational, humanistic-existential and psychodynamic. I'm Skylar first, therapist second. This means that while I take professionalism and the American Counseling Association's Code of Ethics very seriously, I bring my authentic self to each session. The relationships I form with clients are real, and necessarily so, because it is through genuine human connection that clients find their way. I am not one who finds utility in elaborate hypotheses filled with flowery psychobabble. I work primarily within frameworks of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, as well as Existential Therapy, and I consider psychodynamics to be a crucial component of the therapeutic process. I am LGBTQ+ affirming and welcome clients from all walks of life, experiences and identities. On a personal note, I grew up on the southern Oregon coast and I am a member of an indigenous community, the Tolowa Dee-Ni Nation. I have taught in Oregon public schools, traveled throughout various countries as an ESL teacher, worked in port administration as well as local politics. I enjoy working with college students and I am passionate about helping neurodivergent adults (autistic, ADHD, etc) with my affirming and strengths-based perspective. I have training and specialize in helping people adjust to visible and invisible disabilities such as chronic illness/pain or physical injuries. I am non-religious and have training and experience working with religious trauma. I also enjoy working with artists, musicians, and other creative types, as well as anyone looking to integrate mind and body and incorporate mindfulness into their life. I use a somatic (body-centered) approach and am certified in working with trauma. I also do Autism/ADHD assessments for adults.

I use relationship building as the foundation of my therapy practice. I believe feeling seen, held, and safe are vital components of being able to grow. My hope is to create an atmosphere where the people I meet with feel met and known which will allow us to walk together through vulnerability. With all my clients I take a Neurobiological approach, which is a fancy way to say I think a lot about nervous systems and how to regulate them. Our nervous systems need co-regulation before they can learn to self-regulate. Together we will explore what feels soothing to your particular system and build strategies from there. I pull Internal Family Systems (IFS) or parts work and Narrative Therapy techniques. My style is client centered, collaborative, affirming, and trauma informed.
